La Grande Vadrouille and Louis de Funès

There was a time, years ago, when there was only one channel on TV in Turkey. Back then, the movies we watched were what amazed us, the characters on them were whom we talked about and the actors playing them were our heroes. The time passed and every now and then I find myself searching for those movies and actors that remain hidden in my memories. The man many of us remember by his gendarme series taking us from sunday boredom is one of them. It took some time for me to find him, for the only vague memory I had of him was his funny face. I am talking about Louis de Funès, ladies and gentlemen, the brilliant actor who is thought to be one of the most influential and unforgettable French actors of all time. And the first movie I had seen knowing who he was, is La Grande Vadrouille, also known as Don't Look Now... We're Being Shot At!

The movie is a 1966 comedy which was the most successful French film of all time with 17.200.000 viewers in cinema, finally losing that to the 2008 movie Bienvenue chez les Ch'tis.

La Grande Vadrouille is set during World War II. A Royal Air Force B-17 loses its way on Paris while returning from a mission and the crew is forced to parachute over the city which is occupied by German Nazis at the time. They have to find each other and go back to England, with the help of two involuntary French men, Augustin Bouvet and Stanislas Lefort (Louis de Funès) and couple of resistance fighters and sympathizers.

I must admit that I did not find the movie uproarious, for the perception of comedy has changed in time and mine is even far from that. And yet, Funès was just as funny as I remembered, his facial expressions, high energy, restlessness and unease were what made him Funès and what made the movie easier to watch. Furthermore, it is far from being a disappointment, and certainly encourages one to see more of Funès in other movies. You MUST track down his movies and no matter what the movie will be about, you will most probably enjoy watching this petit French who is a giant in talent.
